Reform Radio – Collaboration and programming

Reform Radio broadcasts the best in music, arts and culture from Manchester to the world. As well as creating programme content it uses the framework of an online station to support young adults into meaningful employment within the music sector.

The power of the collective

Since it got involved in 2017, Reform Radio has found being part of the MAST network and the collective learning and working this brings incredibly useful.

“It's helped to grow our passion around sustainability and climate justice and focus that passion into effective actions. Hearing what other members are working on drives us to push to the same level and makes us aware of so many factors that we didn't know about or consider previously. Getting all our staff through Carbon Literacy training has been incredible, something that we wouldn't have been able to achieve solo in such a short, easy to access way.”

Determined to reduce the impact of their rented premises, the Reform Radio team are heading up an action group within their building and recruiting like-minded tenants to build their collective voice and encourage their landlord to focus on the building’s energy performance and environmental sustainability.

Doing Earth Day justice

In 2021, Reform Radio hosted an ambitious 24 hours of programming to celebrate Earth Day’s 50th anniversary. The aim was to reach out to its audiences and provide opportunities to learn about and reflect on how we impact the planet and how music can connect us and reinforce our consciousness of these issues. The unique and diverse line up featured 24 different countries represented by 24 international artists. The special hour-long shows allowed up-and-coming artists to showcase their country’s culture and music, as well as sharing with listeners their thoughts and feelings around climate change.

“We will endeavour to increase the voice and power of groups that are otherwise underappreciated or under engaged on sustainability and climate action. This world is all of ours, and we need an inclusive plan moving forward, with diverse voices and experiences to get the most effective and just outcomes.”
