Collaboration, support, policy and engagement frame and drive sector action
Cultural events and venues and artists have such a wide and diverse reach through their audiences, visitors, communities and their peers. They are in a great position to lead by example and demonstrate action and solutions.
We have seen lots of great examples of action by the organisations and individuals involved in C-Change.
Gelsenkirchen
In Gelsenkirchen, the Musiktheater in Revier, inspired by what they saw during a study visit to Manchester, went on to calculate their carbon footprint and develop a new sustainability strategy.
The Consoltheater set up a materials exchange, making items such as materials, equipment and costumes available to others in the sector for use, reuse and recycling.
“C-Change and the examples of good practice we saw in Manchester inspired us to calculate our carbon footprint and develop a new sustainability strategy.”
Tobias Werner, Managing Director, Musik Theater im Revier, Gelsenkirchen

Mantova
In Mantova, they brought the Bike-In concept to city summer events, a new Covid-safe approach to reducing the travel impact of outdoor events.
Festivalletteratura, Italy’s most important literature festival has become a champion of environmental and climate action, through both its operations and its programming. With the municipality’s support, the festival has calculated its carbon footprint. And, in May 2021, the festival launched its new environmental strategy.
“We are trying to set an example for other organisations.”
Arianna Tonneli, Festivalletteratura
C-Change focusing on Action
“Sharing and exchanging what we had been doing through C-Change meetings enabled us to scale up action. Working together helped us develop a sense of direction and collective purpose while at the same time building recognition of the unique role the arts and culture sector could play on climate action and engagement.”
